The first season of Turkey hunting kicks off this weekend.A number of hunters will head out starting tomorrow morning around the area. DNR Conservation Police Officer Ray Wichus reminds hunters they do need to get permits to hunt turkeys. CPOs do see a good number of turkey hunters where they are allowed to hunt between DeWitt and Piatt Counties.[audio:turkeyshroomhunting1.mp3] [/audio]Wichus reminds mushroom hunters to steer clear of State Parks that allow mushroom and turkey hunting until 1 pm in the afternoon. He says the two hunting groups have had confrontations in the past because of mushroom hunters interfering with a hunters turkey hunting. He feels this is the best remedy to keep tempers from flaring.[audio:turkeyshroomhunting2.mp3] [/audio]Hunters are encouraged to park in the marked parking lots of the parks they are hunting in. Wichus says there may be regulations for cities or county roads you may not be aware of you could get citations for. He notes hunting hours and some regulations will be posted on signs in those parking lots as well.[audio:turkeyshroomhunting3.mp3] [/audio]Again turkey hunting season gets underway this weekend and runs until the middle of May.
The Illinois youth wild turkey season harvest has set a record. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday that young hunters harvested 1,300 birds. That's compared with the previous record harvest of about 750 birds last year.IDNR wild turkey project manager Paul Brewer credits excellent hunting weather for the large harvest. Brewer says last spring there was below-average turkey reproduction in many areas because of wet weather. This spring's mild weather contributed to good turkey numbers. This year 4,100 youth turkey permits were issued. Last year about 3,700 were issued. The season was March 31 and April 1 in the southern zone and April 7-8 in the northern zone.Jefferson County was the top county in Illinois with 47 turkeys harvested during the youth hunt.
